Walmer Lane
This 6-acre site features Clove Creek meandering through a wooded area to the north, and views of the Beacon-Fishkill ridge to the west. The original house, built in 1956, had a lack of spatial cohesiveness, ill-proportioned spaces, excessive circulation due to several additions, and little connection to the landscape.
Working within the existing footprint, we inserted a steel structure on the first floor to create an open floor plan connecting the kitchen and living spaces and opening up the house to the landscape and views. Relocating the main entrance and adding secondary entrances connected the house to the terrace and gardens.
A patchwork of exterior finishes was replaced with an energy-efficient, air tight, low-maintenance envelope. Upgraded mechanical systems and solar panels minimize fossil fuel use. Updates to the landscape include a new pool deck, pergola, fenced vegetable garden, and naturalized lawn with a field of black-eyed susan.
