Hudson Valley Compound
The compound, situated on a former industrial site, was comprised of four existing structures: the Cottage, the Garage, the Guest House, and the Main House, all of which were built in disparate styles over the past 150 years.
The Cottage, a historic American Gothic structure built circa 1850 and moved across the frozen Hudson River to its current location, had deteriorated beyond repair. We documented the structure and then dismantled, salvaging all usable material to be restored and reused. The new Cottage retains the iconic form of the original with a modern glass addition in the back, facing the Main House and the Hudson River.
The Guest House, formerly a barn, was rebuilt to house large family gatherings. The first floor features a large catering kitchen, while the second floor is spacious and flexible, with transformable millwork that accommodates both work and sleep.
The Garage, which had previously been renovated as a residence, was restored to its original purpose, and the entry to the Main House was reconfigured to open onto the new bluestone courtyard, which unifies the four buildings, providing a seamless flow between them and serving as a gathering place for the family and guests.
Three geothermal wells under the courtyard provide the heating and cooling for the compound.
