East Main Library W.I.P.
A new library designed for the town of Stony Point, N.Y., that also functions as a community center. Brick is used to recall the area's historic brick manufacturing. It wraps the exterior to define the entrance and peels away to create a protected courtyard. Two large sawtooth skylights let in abundant natural light while protecting the books from direct sunlight. The brick wrapping of the exterior is mimicked by the wrapping of books around the perimeter of the interior, punctuated by slot windows that double as reading nooks. The proposal gives the existing library more space for its extensive programs, a children's library which opens into the courtyard, and a teen room with communal and private study areas. The Stony Point History Room, located on the second floor, houses a collection of historic maps and documents.
